Hot air balloons in Cappadocia

A Cappadocia hot air balloon flight starts with a hotel pickup between 04:30 and 05:30, launches around sunrise and keeps you aloft for about an hour. In summer you are back at the hotel by 08:00, and the flight only happens if the Turkish civil aviation authority (SHGM) approves the morning at dawn.

Read that last sentence twice. No operator, and no desk including ours, can guarantee that a booked flight will take off. What we can do is explain the morning, the cost, and how to plan so one cancelled morning does not cost you the flight.

How a flight morning works

1. 04:30 to 05:30A minibus collects you from the hotel. The exact time depends on the sunrise hour and on where your hotel sits.
2. 05:00 to 05:40A light breakfast at the operator's base while the pilot waits for the SHGM decision on wind and visibility.
3. 05:40Drive to the launch field. Burners are already lit and the envelopes are inflating on their sides.
4. SunriseLaunch. Sunrise moves from about 05:15 in June to about 08:00 in December, and pickups move with it.
5. Sunrise plus 60 minLanding, usually in a field a few kilometres from the launch site. A short celebration, then the minibus.
6. 08:00 in summerBack at the hotel in time for the terrace breakfast. In winter, expect mid-morning.

The launch field at 05:40 in October is about 5 °C and busy. Wear layers, closed shoes, and clothing loose enough to climb over a basket side about 1.2 m high.

Standard or private basket?

Standard baskets carry 16 to 28 passengers in compartments of 4 to 6 people. Smaller baskets of 8 to 12 cost more per person and are sold as "comfort" or "deluxe" flights. A private basket takes only your group, from 2 to about 8 people, and is priced per basket, not per person.

For a couple, the private basket is the honeymoon choice. For a family of five, a comfort flight often gives the same privacy at a lower total, because five people fill a compartment on their own. Who can fly

Operators set their own rules, and the desk confirms them for each booking. In general:

• Children are accepted from about 6 years if they can see over the basket edge, about 1.2 m. [to verify: minimum age and height per operator]
• Pregnant passengers are usually refused at any stage, because of the landing. Ask before booking, not on the morning.
• You climb in over the basket side, and landings can be bumpy. Passengers who cannot stand for an hour, or brace on landing, are generally not accepted.
• Recent surgery, or hip or back problems: tell us, and we ask the operator before taking payment.

These are the operator's rules, not ours, and the pilot's word on the morning is final.

Why flights are cancelled

Wind, almost every time. A balloon cannot be steered, so the pilot needs a light, predictable breeze at ground level and aloft. Each dawn SHGM issues one decision for the whole region: fly, delay, or cancel. No operator can fly against it.

Rain and low cloud cancel less often than wind, and cold does not cancel at all. A December morning at minus 5 °C flies well if the air is still. Winter has more grounded mornings than summer, but a clear winter flight over snow is the one our guests talk about. Cancellations and weather goes month by month and explains rebooking and refunds.

If a morning is cancelled, you are moved to the next morning if there is space, or refunded in full. That is why we ask you to keep a backup morning. If you would rather stay on the ground, watching the balloons without flying is free and needs no booking.

The honest promise

We book you with a licensed operator and a pilot certified by SHGM, and we tell you the cancellation rule before you pay. We will not tell you the flight is guaranteed, because it never is.

What month are the hot air balloons in Cappadocia?

Every month; there is no closed season. April to June and September to October have the most flying mornings, the most balloons in the sky and the highest prices. Winter has more wind days and the fewest balloons, and a flight over snow if the morning is still.

How much does it cost?

Is it worth it?

If you can spare two mornings, yes. The hour over the valleys is the reason most of our guests travel. With one night only, book it knowing that wind can take it away, and read the refund rule first.

How many balloons crash in Cappadocia?

We do not publish counts, because we cannot source them reliably and will not guess. Commercial ballooning in Türkiye is regulated by SHGM, which licenses operators and pilots, inspects aircraft and issues the fly or no-fly decision each dawn.
