Where to stay in Cappadocia

A cave hotel in Cappadocia is a room cut into soft volcanic rock, usually in Göreme, Uçhisar or Ürgüp, 40 to 75 minutes from the two airports. The desk books these hotels by enquiry rather than through a live search, because a family of five needs a specific suite, not a room type.

What a cave hotel actually is

The rock under Göreme is tuff, a compressed volcanic ash soft enough to carve by hand. People have cut homes, churches and dovecotes into it for over a thousand years. A cave hotel is one of those homes with plumbing, heating and a terrace added.

You will meet three kinds of room, and hotels mix them:

1. Carved cave rooms. The original spaces. Rock walls, curved ceilings, a small window or none. They stay cool in July and hold a steady temperature in January, but they can feel damp and dark.
2. Arched stone rooms. Built rather than carved, with cut-stone vaults and full windows. Brighter and drier, and often the better choice for a family of five.
3. Restored mansions. Old stone houses in Ürgüp, Mustafapaşa and Ortahisar with courtyards and several rooms off one hall. Good for a family that wants a whole floor.

Do not book a windowless cave for a five-night stay with children. One night in a true cave is an experience; five nights is a complaint we hear at the desk every season.

The three villages

Göreme is the centre. The balloon launch field is on its edge, so on a flying morning the balloons pass over the roofs. It has the most hotels, the most restaurants and the most noise. It sits at about 1,100 m.

Uçhisar is the highest village, built around a rock castle 5 km from Göreme. Its terraces face the valley and the launch field, so the view is the widest in the region. It is quieter, more expensive on average, and steep.

Ürgüp and Ortahisar are the town and the village to its west. Ürgüp has flat streets, shops, a hospital and the larger restored mansions. Ortahisar is small, quiet and cheaper, and 10 minutes by car from Göreme.

What a Gulf family should ask

We check six things before we send a hotel. Ask the same six if you book direct.

• Rooms for five without extra beds. Most cave rooms sleep two or three. Ask for a family suite with two bedrooms, or two connecting rooms, and get the bed plan in writing.
• Privacy. A private entrance and a terrace that is not overlooked. Some terraces are shared with the room next door.
• Pool. Few cave hotels have one, and most outdoor pools open only from late spring to early autumn. Ask for the dates.
• Halal breakfast. Meat is halal as standard in Türkiye. Ask whether the breakfast is fully pork-free and whether the hotel bar serves alcohol, if that matters to you.
• Prayer space. Most rooms have floor space for a mat. Ask for the qibla direction and whether a mat is provided; a nearby mosque is normal in every village.
• Terrace facing the launch field. Not every terrace faces the balloons. The launch field is on the Göreme side, so ask which way the terrace looks.
