Private or shared balloon flight: which to book

A shared balloon flight in Cappadocia puts you in a basket of 16 to 28 passengers and costs indicatively [to verify: AED 950 to 1,400] per person. For a couple on honeymoon, private is the flight to book if the budget allows. For a family of five, a shared comfort basket is usually the better value and nearly as private. Here is the comparison.

What "private" actually buys

Three things, in order of how much guests say they valued them afterwards.

1. The basket to yourselves. No compartments, no strangers' elbows, no queue for the corner with the best view. In a basket of two the pilot turns the balloon so that both of you face the sunrise, which cannot happen with 24 people aboard.
2. A private car and your own timing. You are collected alone, not on the third stop of a minibus round, and the pilot can agree a longer flight of up to 90 minutes if the wind allows.
3. The photographs. Every image is of the two of you, with balloons and valleys behind, and nobody else's head in the frame. For a honeymoon album, this is often the real reason.

Who should book private

• Couples on honeymoon. The honeymoon page pairs a private flight with a cave suite in Uçhisar and a terrace breakfast afterwards, which is the sequence most of our couples choose.
• Anyone marking an occasion. A proposal, an anniversary, a fortieth. Operators will place a sign or flowers in the basket if asked when booking.
• Guests who need privacy. A family who would rather not share a compartment with strangers, for any reason, gets a basket where that question never arises.
• Groups of 6 to 8. Split eight ways, a private family basket often costs about the same per person as a comfort seat, and is entirely your own.

Who should book shared

• Most travellers. The view is identical. Standing shoulder to shoulder with a family from Riyadh and a couple from Seoul is part of the morning for many people.
• Families of five. A comfort basket of 8 to 12 has compartments of 4 to 6, so five people fill one on their own. The privacy is nearly that of a private basket at about a third of the total.
• Anyone on a two-night stay. Private baskets are fewer, so a cancelled private flight is harder to rebook for the next morning than a shared seat.
• Children. In a bigger basket, a child of 6 or 7 has other passengers to talk to and a pilot who is used to them.

The sum for a family of five

Take a Gulf family of two adults and three children of 7, 10 and 14, all old enough to fly. Five comfort seats at the mid range of the indicative price come to [to verify: about AED 8,500] in total. What the desk recommends

Book shared unless you are two people marking something, or a group of six or more.
