Balloon cancellations and weather in Cappadocia

Balloons fly in Cappadocia in every month of the year, and the question is not the month but the morning. Each dawn the Turkish civil aviation authority, SHGM, decides for the whole region whether balloons fly, wait, or stay on the ground. Wind is the reason for almost every no.

The desk's honest summary: spring and autumn have the most flying mornings, and summer is very reliable with early pickups. Winter has more grounded mornings but flies well when the air is still. Cold, on its own, never cancels a flight.

What month are the hot air balloons in Cappadocia?

There is no season when the balloons stop. What changes through the year is three things: the sunrise hour, which sets your pickup; the share of mornings the wind grounds; and how many balloons share the sky. The table gives the mechanism month by month, in words rather than percentages, because we will not print a figure we cannot source.

The sunrise hours are astronomical and move a few minutes within each month [to verify: sunrise and pickup times per month against the operators' current pickup sheet]. Pickups are usually 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise, earlier for hotels far from the base.

A word on winter. A grounded morning in January is more likely than in May. But a January flight that does take off is over snow, with a fraction of the balloons and clear, dense air. What happens on the morning

You are collected from the hotel and driven to the operator's base while it is still dark. Breakfast is laid out, and the pilot is on the phone or the radio. What follows is one of three outcomes.

1. About 90 min before sunrisePickup. Nobody yet knows whether the flight will go; the forecast from the evening is a guide only.
2. At the baseSHGM issues its decision for the region: fly, delay, or cancel. The pilot may also decline a morning the authority has approved.
3. FlyDrive to the field, inflation, launch around sunrise, about an hour aloft, landing and the drive back.
4. DelayA wait of 30 to 90 minutes at the base for a gust to pass or fog to lift. A shorter flight sometimes follows.
5. CancelYou are driven back to the hotel. The operator offers the next available morning or a full refund.

Two things surprise guests. First, a cancellation can come after you have reached the field, or even after inflation has begun, because the wind aloft is measured last. Second, the pilot can refuse a morning the authority has approved; a captain's decision on the day is final and is a good sign, not a bad one.

Rebooking and refunds

If the morning is cancelled, the operator moves you to the next available morning. In peak weeks the next morning may already be full, in which case the desk works down its list of operators to find a seat. If nothing can be found before you leave, the full price is refunded to the card you paid with.

There is no charge for a weather cancellation, ever. If a reseller keeps any part of the price after a grounded morning, they are keeping a margin the operator did not take. The exact refund route and timing for your flight are on the prices page and on the booking page itself.

How to plan a backup morning

The single most useful thing you can do is arrive with mornings to spare.

1. Three nights, minimum. Book the balloon for the second morning. The first morning you are tired from the flight from the Gulf; the third is the backup.
2. Four nights in winter. From December to February, two backup mornings is the desk's standard advice.
3. Do not book the flight for the morning you leave. A cancelled morning becomes a refund rather than a flight, and the transfer to the airport waits for nobody.
4. Keep the other mornings free of early commitments. A rebooked flight means a 05:00 pickup you did not plan for.
5. If you cannot fly at all, watch. The viewpoints page lists where to see the launch from the ground, which needs no booking and is never cancelled unless the balloons are.

Reading the forecast the night before

The State Meteorological Service (MGM) forecast for Nevşehir is the one the operators watch. What matters is wind at 10 m, not temperature. Below about 10 km/h at dawn, the morning will almost certainly fly; above about 20 km/h, it almost certainly will not. In between, it is the authority's call [to verify: operators' wind thresholds]. Treat this as a way to manage your own expectations, not as a prediction you can plan around.
