Things to do in Cappadocia

Cappadocia has four main sights within 20 km of Göreme: the underground cities, the walking valleys, the fairy chimneys and the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Each one takes half a day, so three nights covers all four plus a sunrise balloon flight.

The region sits at about 1,100 m in central Türkiye. Mornings are cool even in July, and afternoons in high summer pass 32 °C, so the order below puts the exposed sights early and the shaded ones late.

What is Cappadocia known for?

Cappadocia is known for three things: the balloon flights at dawn, the rock cones called fairy chimneys, and the cave dwellings cut into soft volcanic rock. Whole churches and cities were dug the same way. UNESCO listed the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia in 1985. Is Cappadocia worth visiting?

Yes, for three nights or more. Two nights leaves one morning for the balloon and one for a single sight, which is not enough if wind cancels the flight. The four half-days

The museum first, because coaches fill it from mid-morning. The underground city at midday in summer, because the air inside stays cool all year. The valleys and chimneys when the light is low, for the photographs and for the heat.

Avanos, the pottery town 15 minutes north of Göreme, is the spare half-day. A workshop lets children under ten sit at the wheel, and it is indoors, so it works in rain, snow or a 35 °C afternoon.

What suits families with children

Families of five from the Gulf are the desk's most common booking, so this is the honest filter. The fairy chimneys at Paşabağ and Devrent are flat, short and free to wander, so they work for every age. The Göreme museum is fine from about six; the church steps are steep and the youngest get bored before the frescoes.

The underground cities need a child who will walk 200 m of low, narrow passage without being carried. Prams stay at the entrance. The valleys are best done as a short out-and-back rather than a full loop with children under ten.

Prayer space is not provided at the sites. The mosques in Göreme and Avanos town centres are within a five-minute drive of every sight on this page.

What to skip in heat or snow

In July and August, skip the full Rose and Red Valley loop after 10:00; there is almost no shade and the return is uphill. Do the museum at opening and the underground city at noon instead.

In January and February, skip the Love Valley floor after fresh snow; the path turns to mud by midday. The museum, the chimneys and the underground cities all work in snow, and the chimneys under snow are the best photograph of the year.

Ihlara Valley, 90 minutes south-west, is the one valley with shade and a river. It is worth the drive in summer and not worth it in a snowstorm.
