A Cappadocia honeymoon: the three-night plan

A Cappadocia honeymoon works best as three nights in a suite with a private terrace in Uçhisar. Book the balloon flight for the second morning and keep the third as a backup. From Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Riyadh that is a four-night trip including the flights, and it fits either side of a longer stay in Istanbul.

Where to stay

Uçhisar, for one reason: the private terraces on its south slope face the launch field, so on the mornings you do not fly, you watch from bed. Göreme puts you closer to dinner but the terraces are more often overlooked. Ürgüp is a town, and better for families than for two.

The suite matters more than the hotel. Ask for one with its own walled terrace, a bathroom carved as a hammam, and a window that faces east. The luxury cave hotels page explains what the top-end suites include and what they cost in dirhams.

Private or shared balloon

A shared basket carries 16 to 28 passengers and is the standard flight. A private basket carries only the two of you and the pilot, flies the same route, and costs several times more. Our honest view: for a honeymoon, the private basket is worth it if the budget allows, because a shared basket at dawn is a crowd with phones. If it does not, book a smaller shared basket and take the early slot.

Whichever you choose, the flight goes only with the day's approval from the civil aviation authority (SHGM). Book it for your second morning so the third is a backup, and never for the morning you fly home.

The three-night plan

1. Day 1, 15:00Land at Kayseri or Nevşehir, private transfer to Uçhisar, 40 to 80 minutes. Tea on the terrace, walk up to the castle for sunset, dinner in the hotel.
2. Day 2, 04:45Pickup for the balloon flight. Airborne around sunrise, an hour in the air, back at the hotel for a late breakfast.
3. Day 2, 16:00Rest through the afternoon. Private driver to Rose Valley for the walk down at golden hour, then dinner at the terrace rail.
4. Day 3, 05:40Backup morning. If you flew yesterday, watch from the terrace with coffee. If not, this is your flight.
5. Day 3, 11:00Underground city and Avanos pottery with a driver, or a hammam afternoon at the hotel. Second terrace dinner.
6. Day 4, morningLate breakfast, transfer to the airport, fly home or on to Istanbul.

The balloons land at about [to verify: landing time by season], and most hotels will hold breakfast for returning guests if you ask the night before.

Privacy and quiet

The questions to send the hotel before paying:

• Is the terrace overlooked from any path, room or the restaurant?
• Can dinner be served on our terrace, and until what hour?
• Is there a women-only or private slot in the hammam?
• Is the shared terrace with the bar far from our suite?
• Will the balloon burners at 05:30 wake us on the mornings we do not fly?

That last one is not a complaint. Most couples want to wake for it. Just know that on a flying morning, the sound reaches every terrace facing the field.

When to go

• April to early June. Green valleys, flights most mornings, cool nights. The best balance and the busiest.
• September and October. Warm days, clear mornings, the most reliable flying weather of the year. Our first choice.
• December to February. Snow on the chimneys, cold clear dawns, and the cheapest suites. Flights are cancelled more often for wind and fog, so the third-morning backup matters more.
• July and August. Hot afternoons for a Gulf visitor used to air conditioning; cave rooms stay cool, but the valleys do not. Fewer cancellations, more people.

Avoid the two Eid weeks unless you book six months ahead; the top suites sell out to Gulf and Istanbul demand together.

Getting there from the Gulf

Fly to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV). Kayseri has more flights and is 75 minutes from Uçhisar by private car; Nevşehir is closer, about 45 minutes, but has fewer connections. From Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Riyadh or Jeddah the usual route is one stop in Istanbul, and direct flights to Kayseri appear only in some seasons.

Aim to land by mid-afternoon on day one. A midnight arrival works, but the first sunset on the terrace is lost, and on a three-night honeymoon that sunset is a third of the trip. Ask for the transfer with the flight number on the booking, so the driver waits if the plane is late.

Pack for the temperature, not the country. Uçhisar sits above 1,300 m, and even in May the terrace at 05:40 needs a coat.
