Where to stay in Cappadocia: Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Ortahisar or Avanos

Stay in Göreme if you want the balloons over your roof and everything within walking distance. Stay in Uçhisar if you want the widest view and a quieter night, and in Ürgüp if you are a family that wants flat streets and a town. Ortahisar and Avanos are the value choices, 10 to 15 minutes from the action by car.

All five villages sit inside a circle about 15 km across, so no choice is a mistake. But the character of each is different, and so is what you pay.

Göreme

Göreme is a village of about 2,000 people at 1,100 m, in the middle of the national park. The balloon launch field is on its edge, the open-air museum is a 20-minute walk, and the bus station, the restaurants and the shops are in one small centre.

Choose it for a first visit, for a short stay, or if you want to walk to dinner without a car. The cost is noise: burners at 05:30 on flying mornings, scooters in the evening and a full centre in April, May, September and October. Hotels climb the slopes on both sides, so expect steps.

Uçhisar

Uçhisar is the highest village, built around a rock castle you can see from everywhere in the region. It is about 5 km from Göreme by road. The hotels on its south-facing slope look over Pigeon Valley toward Göreme, and on a flying morning the balloons rise across that view.

Choose it for the terrace, for quiet, and for the larger luxury hotels, which are concentrated here. The cost is that everything is uphill, there is less choice for dinner, and prices are higher on average. The luxury cave hotels page covers the top end in detail.

Ürgüp

Ürgüp is a town rather than a village, about 8 km east of Göreme. It has a hospital, pharmacies, a supermarket, banks and a proper main street. The old quarter on the hill has restored stone mansions with courtyards, and many of the two-bedroom family suites in the region are here.

Choose it if you are a family of five, if someone in the party finds steps hard, or if you want to eat somewhere different every night. The cost is distance: you drive to the launch field and the valleys, 15 minutes each way.

Ortahisar

Ortahisar sits between Göreme and Ürgüp, about 5 km from each, around its own rock castle. It is a working village with cold-storage caves for citrus and potatoes, a small square, and a handful of hotels that cost less than the equivalent in Göreme.

Choose it for value and quiet, and if you have a car or are booking transfers anyway. The cost is that there is little to do in the village after dark.

Avanos

Avanos is a town on the Kızılırmak river, about 10 km north of Göreme, known for pottery. It is flat, has a riverside walk and the region's best-known pottery kebab restaurants, and it is the least touristy of the five.

Choose it if you want a town that lives its own life and do not mind driving to the balloons. Cave hotels are fewer here; most rooms are in stone houses.

Do not split a short stay

On a three- or four-night trip, stay in one village. Moving hotels costs half a day of packing and check-in times, and the villages are 10 to 15 minutes apart by car anyway. Choose one base and use a driver for the afternoons.

The exception is a week or longer, where two nights in Ürgüp or Avanos after four in Göreme or Uçhisar gives a different pace. Ask the desk before booking two hotels; we will tell you honestly whether the move is worth it for your dates.

Transfer times from the airports

Ürgüp is the closest of the three to Kayseri, which is where most Gulf flights land. Ortahisar adds about 5 minutes to the Ürgüp time; Avanos is about 45 minutes from either airport.

Which village for you

• Family of five: Ürgüp first, then Uçhisar. The family cave hotels page has the room checklist.
• Couple, first visit, three nights: Göreme or Uçhisar, depending on whether you want to walk to dinner or watch the sunrise from bed.
• Honeymoon or a milestone: Uçhisar. The private terraces there face the launch field.
• Budget, with transfers booked: Ortahisar or Avanos.
