Cappadocia's valleys: Love, Pigeon, Rose, Red and Ihlara

Love Valley is a 4 to 5 km walk on a mostly flat floor between Göreme and Çavuşin. It is the valley most Gulf visitors mean when they ask about walking in Cappadocia. The other four are Pigeon Valley (about 4 km, Göreme to Uçhisar) and Rose and Red Valley (a 4 to 6 km loop with the best colour). Ihlara is a 4 km river section 90 minutes away, and the only one with shade.

None of the four valleys near Göreme has real shade. Between June and September, walk before 09:00 or after 17:00, or choose Ihlara.

Love Valley

Love Valley runs north from Göreme towards Çavuşin, and its tall rock columns are the ones on the postcards. The floor is sandy and flat, so it suits children who can manage an hour of walking, and it is the easiest valley to do without a guide.

Start from Göreme village, where the track leaves the road north of the balloon launch fields, or drive to the Love Valley viewpoint and walk down. The viewpoint has a car park and a small café. Walking down from the viewpoint and back up is the short version, about 40 minutes, and it is what we suggest for families with a child under eight.

After snow the floor turns to mud by midday, which is why the things to do hub says to skip it in January after a fresh fall.

Pigeon Valley

Pigeon Valley connects Göreme and Uçhisar, and it is named for the hundreds of dovecotes cut into the cliffs. Farmers kept pigeons for the droppings, which they used as fertiliser on the vineyards, and painted the entrances white so the birds found them.

The walk is uphill from Göreme to Uçhisar castle, which is the wrong direction in heat. Do it the other way: taxi or transfer to Uçhisar, walk down to Göreme, and finish at your hotel. There are a few short sections where the path narrows above a drop; hold hands with children under ten.

Rose Valley and Red Valley

Rose and Red are one system of ridges between Çavuşin and Ortahisar, and the names come from the colour the rock turns in the last hour of daylight. This is the valley walk that repays a guide, because the paths fork often and the best rock-cut churches, including the Columned Church, are easy to miss.

Start at the Rose Valley viewpoint above Çavuşin, where the car park [to verify: whether a parking fee is currently charged] and the tea stalls are. The full loop is 4 to 6 km with two short scrambles where you use your hands. The out-and-back to the first church and the sunset ridge is about 90 minutes and needs no scrambling.

Sunset is the reason to be here. Arrive 90 minutes before, walk out, and be on the ridge for the last half hour of light. Bring a torch for the walk back to the car.

Ihlara Valley

Ihlara is different from the other four. It is a 14 km gorge cut by the Melendiz river, about 90 minutes south-west of Göreme, with trees along the water and a dozen rock-cut churches in the walls. The 4 km stretch from Ihlara village to Belisırma is the walk, and it is the only valley in this guide where a family can walk at 13:00 in August.

The entrance at Ihlara village is a state museum with a ticket booth. Entry costs [to verify: Ihlara Valley entry, AED per person] per person, indicative as of 23 September 2026, with the live price on the booking page. From the ticket booth about 300 steps lead down to the river; that is the only hard part. Restaurants at Belisırma sit on platforms over the water and serve grilled trout and lamb; meat is halal as standard in Türkiye.

Ihlara pairs with the underground cities, which are on the way, for a full day out of Göreme.

Where to start, and what to wear

Start every valley walk from the higher end, and finish with your transfer waiting at the low end. For Love Valley that means the viewpoint; for Pigeon, Uçhisar; for Rose, the viewpoint above Çavuşin; for Ihlara, the village end.

Wear closed shoes with grip in every season; sandals slip on the tuff dust and the mud after snow. An abaya is fine on the flat floors of Love and Ihlara, and less practical on the Rose Valley scrambles, where trousers under it help. A hat and one litre of water per person from June to September; there are no taps or shops on the valley floors.

In winter the floors are icy in shade until about 11:00, so start later than you would in summer. The valleys under snow, seen from the fairy chimneys at Paşabağ or the Rose Valley ridge, are the best photographs of the year.
