Where is Cappadocia?

Cappadocia is a region in central Türkiye, centred on the village of Göreme in Nevşehir province, about 730 km south-east of Istanbul and about 290 km south-east of Ankara. From the Gulf it is a flight of roughly 4 hours to Kayseri when a direct service runs, and most of a day when you connect through Istanbul.

Is Cappadocia in Istanbul?

No, and this is the question we answer most often. Istanbul is on the coast in the far north-west of the country. Cappadocia is inland, on a high plateau in the middle of Anatolia, and the two are 730 km apart by road. That is about the same distance as Dubai to Riyadh.

Which towns make up Cappadocia?

Cappadocia is a historical name rather than an administrative one. Today it means the landscape of rock cones, valleys and cave villages in and around Nevşehir province, with parts of Kayseri, Aksaray, Kırşehir and Niğde provinces at the edges.

The whole visitor area fits inside a circle about 25 km across. A car covers any two points in under 40 minutes, which is why three or four nights is enough to see it properly.

What is Cappadocia known for?

Three things. First, the rock: soft volcanic tuff that wind and water have cut into cones, ridges and the tall pillars called fairy chimneys. Second, the caves: for two thousand years people have carved homes, churches, dovecotes and entire underground cities into that rock, and today many of the homes are hotels. Third, the balloons: on a clear morning up to 150 balloons lift off before sunrise, and the view from a cave-hotel terrace is the reason most people come.

UNESCO listed Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia as a World Heritage site in 1985.

Where is Cappadocia on the map?

Göreme sits at 38.6431 north, 34.8289 east, at about 1,100 m above sea level. Mount Erciyes, the extinct volcano whose ash made the landscape, stands 3,917 m high to the east near Kayseri and is visible from the balloon on a clear day.

The altitude matters more than the latitude. At 1,100 m the air is dry and the nights are cool even in July, and in winter the ground freezes and holds snow for days. Cappadocia weather has the monthly figures.

Time zone and what it means for the balloon morning

Türkiye is on UTC+3 all year, with no clock change. That is the same as Riyadh, Jeddah, Kuwait, Doha and Manama, and one hour behind Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The practical effect: a 05:00 balloon pickup in Göreme is 06:00 on your body clock if you came from the UAE, which makes the early start a little easier. Set your phone to local time on landing, because the pickup time on the voucher is Türkiye time.

Is Cappadocia worth visiting from the Gulf?

Yes, for three or more nights, and especially between April and June or September and November. It is a 4-hour flight or a day's connection, the cave hotels suit families who want private rooms and terraces, and the landscape is unlike anything in the region. In summer it is hot in the afternoon but 10 degrees cooler than the Gulf at night; in winter it snows.

Where it disappoints is when it is rushed. One night means one chance at the balloon, and the flight is cancelled on some mornings by the aviation authority for wind. Give it three nights and the trip almost always works.
