Cappadocia weather, month by month

Cappadocia has a continental climate: cold, snowy winters with lows around minus 5 °C, and dry summers with highs around 30 °C. Rain is light and falls mostly in spring, and the wind, not the temperature, is what cancels balloon flights.

For a Gulf traveller the surprise is not the summer, which is milder than home, but the winter and the mornings. A balloon pickup in January means standing on a frozen field at minus 6 °C an hour before sunrise.

Cappadocia weather month by month

The figures below are typical averages for Nevşehir, the nearest weather station to Göreme at a similar altitude. [to verify: each month's average high and low against the current MGM climate normals] Göreme itself is a few degrees colder at dawn because cold air settles in the valleys.

A rough rule: subtract 5 degrees from the daytime high for the balloon morning, and dress for that.

Does it snow in Cappadocia?

Yes. Snow falls between late November and March, and it settles because the ground is frozen and the plateau is high. January and February are the months with snow on the ground most often; December is a coin toss, and a white Christmas week is not guaranteed.

Does it rain?

Not much. Nevşehir receives [to verify: annual rainfall, typically quoted around 400 mm] a year, with April and May the wettest months and July and August almost dry. Rain in Cappadocia is usually a shower that passes, not a day lost. The valleys turn to sticky mud after rain, so walking shoes rather than sandals.

How hot is summer?

Afternoons in July and August reach 30 to 32 °C with low humidity and strong sun. That is cooler than Dubai or Riyadh, but at 1,100 m the sun is sharper, so hats and water matter on valley walks. Nights drop to 13 or 14 °C, and a light jacket is needed on a terrace after 22:00.

Plan valley walks and the underground cities for the morning. Keep the afternoon for a pool or a cave room, which stays at about 20 °C without air conditioning, and go out again after 17:00.

Wind: what actually cancels balloon flights

Balloons fly only when the Turkish civil aviation authority, the SHGM, clears the morning. It checks wind at the surface and at altitude, visibility and rain. The temperature itself is never the reason, and balloons fly in snow if the air is still.

Sunrise and pickup times through the year

Balloon pickups run about 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise. In June sunrise in Göreme is at about [to verify: June sunrise time, roughly 05:15], so the pickup is close to 04:00. What to pack by season

• December to February. A proper winter coat, hat, gloves, warm socks and shoes with grip. Thermal layers for the balloon morning. Children need waterproof boots for snow.
• March to May and October to November. Layers: a fleece for morning and evening, a light jacket, walking shoes for mud.
• June to September. Light clothes, a hat, sun cream, a jumper for evenings and a windproof layer for the balloon basket at 04:30.

Which month should you choose?
