Visa requirements for Cappadocia: GCC citizens and residents

Citizens of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman can enter Türkiye for tourism without a consular visa. Depending on the passport, entry is visa-free on arrival or with an e-Visa bought online. Residents of the Gulf on other passports usually need an e-Visa, sometimes with conditions, and some need a consular visa.

Cappadocia itself has no extra permit. Once you are in Türkiye, the region is a domestic flight away. This page is about the border, not the valleys.

GCC citizens: what you need

Rules change, and the airline at check-in applies the rule in force that day. Two minutes on evisa.gov.tr before you book is the check. If the site tells you no visa is needed for your passport, save a screenshot of that page for check-in.

GCC residents on other passports

Many families travelling from the Gulf hold Indian, Pakistani, Egyptian, Jordanian, Lebanese, Filipino or other passports with a UAE or Saudi residence permit. For these travellers the rule depends on the passport, not the residence.

• Eligible for a standard e-Visa. Many nationalities apply online, pay by card and receive a PDF within minutes. [to verify: fee per nationality]
• Eligible for a conditional e-Visa. Some nationalities may use the e-Visa only if they hold a valid residence permit or a valid visa from a listed country, and arrive on an approved airline. • Consular visa required. A minority of nationalities must apply at a Turkish consulate in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Riyadh. Allow three to four weeks.

The e-Visa site asks the questions in order and tells you which group you fall into. Do not use third-party sites that charge a service fee for the same form.

How the e-Visa works

1. Go to evisa.gov.tr, the official site of the Republic of Türkiye. Nothing else is official.
2. Choose your passport country and travel dates. The site states whether you are eligible and on what conditions.
3. Enter the passport details exactly as printed. A single mismatched letter is refused at check-in.
4. Pay by card. The e-Visa arrives by e-mail as a PDF; print it and keep it on your phone.
5. The e-Visa is valid for a window of dates and for a maximum stay. [to verify: validity window and maximum stay for the standard e-Visa]

Passport validity and documents

Türkiye requires a passport valid for a period beyond your stay. Children need their own passport; a child on a parent's passport is not accepted by most airlines.

Carry the hotel booking, the return ticket and your residence card if you hold one. Border officers rarely ask, but airlines do at check-in.

Common mistakes the desk sees

• Booking flights before checking the e-Visa. If a family member on a different passport needs a consular visa, the flights are lost.
• Using a residence visa as proof of nationality. The e-Visa eligibility follows the passport. A Gulf residence permit helps only where the conditional e-Visa allows it.
• Expired passports on children. Children's passports expire sooner than adults'. Check every one.
• Mixed families. A UAE citizen father, an Egyptian passport mother and children on either passport can each have a different rule. Check each person separately.
• Assuming the Istanbul connection needs a transit visa. It does not, if you stay airside. If you leave the airport to see Istanbul, the visa rule for your passport applies from that moment.

After the border: getting to Cappadocia
