Cappadocia in December

It is also the busiest winter month, because the Saudi midyear break, the UAE winter break and New Year all land in the same four weeks.

The weather in December

Early December often looks like late autumn: cold mornings, bare vineyards, and dry clear days that suit the valley walks. Frost is normal from the first week. The month turns properly cold in the second half, and by the last ten days the ground around Uçhisar is usually white.

A warm December can stay above freezing all day; a cold one can bring a week of -8 °C nights and a metre of snow on the high ground.

Days are short. Sunrise is close to 07:55 and sunset before 17:00, so the useful daylight is nine hours. Plan the outdoor day between 09:00 and 16:00 and keep the museums and the underground cities for the edges.

Fog is the other December feature. Cold clear nights leave the valleys under a low mist until mid-morning, which is lovely from a terrace in Uçhisar and a problem for the balloons. It usually lifts by 10:00, so the underground cities or a late breakfast fill the gap well.

When does the first snow fall?

In most years the first lasting snow arrives between the second and fourth week of December, sometimes earlier in the high villages. Light falls in late November are common but melt within a day. If snow is the reason for the trip, the last ten days of December are the safer bet within this month, though nothing is guaranteed.

The desk keeps a note of when the valleys turned white each year, and the spread is wide: some years the first week, some years not until early January. A December trip should be planned to enjoy the cold clear days, with snow as a likely bonus rather than a promise.

Why December is the peak for Gulf families

The practical effect is that family cave suites for five in Göreme and Uçhisar sell out for the second half of December by October. Flights from Jeddah, Riyadh and Dubai to Istanbul are full and the Kayseri connection is priced accordingly. Book the hotel first, then the flights, and do it early.

The first two weeks of December are a different month. Prices are lower, valleys are quiet, and there is a fair chance of snow on the high ground by the second weekend. If your school calendar allows it, early December gives you most of the winter experience without the queues.

New Year in Cappadocia

New Year week, from about 27 December to 3 January, is the single busiest week of the winter. Hotels ask for minimum stays of three or four nights, restaurants in Göreme need booking, and the balloon operators are fully sold for the mornings around 31 December.

Cappadocia does not stage a big New Year event. Hotels put on a dinner, some with music, and the fireworks are small. Families from the Gulf who want a quiet night in a heated cave suite will be comfortable. Those who want a party should stay in Istanbul and come afterwards.

Balloons in December

Balloon flights operate every morning that the Turkish civil aviation authority (SHGM) approves, and December brings more cancellations than autumn because of wind and fog. Sunrise flights take off near 08:00, so the pickup is around 06:15 and the flight is over by 09:30. Book the flight for the first morning of your stay and hold the following mornings as backups. Packing for December

Bring a padded, waterproof jacket, thermal layers, waterproof boots with grip, gloves, a hat and thick socks for every family member. Add sunglasses, because snow glare on a clear day is strong. A small daypack with spare gloves and socks for the children saves an afternoon.
