An afternoon at the wheel in Avanos

Avanos is 8 km north of Göreme, about 15 minutes by car, and a pottery workshop there fills two to three hours of an afternoon regardless of weather. Children from about five can sit at the wheel with help, and the piece you throw is usually not the piece you take home.

The river and the clay

The Kızılırmak is the longest river inside Türkiye, and it runs red because of the iron-rich clay it carries. Avanos grew on that clay. The town's potters still dig it from the riverbanks, weather it, and throw it on wheels driven by the foot rather than a motor.

The colour is the first thing a visitor notices: the clay is a deep brick red when wet and a paler terracotta when fired. The second thing is the smell of the workshops, which is damp earth and wood smoke from the kilns.

How a session runs

Most workshops are family businesses with a showroom in front and the wheels at the back, often in rooms cut into the rock. A session for visitors follows the same pattern almost everywhere:

1. 0 to 15 minA master potter throws a piece to show the stages: centring, opening, pulling the wall, shaping the lip. He makes it look like nothing. It is not nothing.
2. 15 to 45 minEach guest sits at a wheel in turn. The potter keeps a hand on yours for the first minute. Most first pieces become a bowl, whatever you intended.
3. 45 to 75 minA walk through the drying room and the kiln, then the painting room where the fine Hittite-pattern pieces are decorated by hand.
4. 75 min onwardThe showroom. There is no pressure to buy in the workshops we use, but this is where the afternoon ends, so plan for it.

The piece you throw cannot be fired and shipped the same day; firing and glazing take days. A few workshops offer to fire it and send it on, but most guests photograph their bowl and buy a finished piece instead. Set that expectation with children before you sit down.

What children can manage

Children of five to eight need an adult's hands on the wheel with them, and they enjoy the first five minutes intensely and the next five hardly at all. That is normal. Bring a change of top for anyone under ten; the clay goes everywhere and washes out.

Children of nine and up can usually centre a small piece with instruction and are proud of it. Teenagers often want a second turn. If you have a wide age range, ask the workshop to seat the youngest first, while their attention is fresh, and the oldest last.

The rest of the afternoon

Avanos has a riverside promenade that is pleasant for half an hour in any season, with a footbridge and tea gardens on the bank. The town has several mosques within a few minutes' walk of the workshop quarter, and the Asr prayer falls comfortably inside a late-afternoon visit. Meat is halal as standard in Türkiye; the riverside restaurants serve grills and the local clay-pot stew, cooked and served in the same pottery you have just been handling.

Putting it in a day

The pattern that works for families is a morning valley walk, lunch in Göreme, then Avanos from about 14:00 to 17:00, with a private car waiting.
